Jesse Brouwer

Biography

I am Jesse Brouwer: pianist, singer, composer and improviser. My work does not fit neatly into one genre. And I rather like that.

I studied at the Popacademie and at HKU in the Musician 3.0 programme. That is where my curiosity about making music with other people took clearer form.

That curiosity still runs through everything I do. In an original song, I look for the right words and sounds. On stage, I listen to what the moment needs. With a group, I offer direction while leaving room for ideas I could not have thought of myself.

Alongside my work as a performing musician, I am artistic director and trainer at Tune In and Het Geluid van Overvecht. With Benjamin de Boer, I am building MEEMAKERS.

I have worked with, among others, Het Concertgebouw, TivoliVredenburg, BIMHUIS, Lister, Cultuur19, Buitenkunst and Boom Chicago. Kobranie — conducted improvisation with a group — is also part of my experience.

From comedy and choral music to neoclassical piano, I look for musical freedom, attention and playing together in all these different settings.
