This is where my own songs meet: poetic lyrics, distinctive compositions and stories I want to share.

The songs move between the personal and the everyday, between seriousness and playfulness. Piano and voice are the foundation. Double bass and percussion add another colour to that world.

As John Ether, I improvise neoclassical piano music. A feeling, a poem or the location itself can be the starting point. Each concert finds its own path.

Tune In

At Tune In, people experiencing mental-health challenges make music together. Improvisation and composition offer room to participate, experiment and let an individual voice be heard.

I develop the artistic direction, guide workshop leaders and deliver workshops and training. What happens in practice also informs new ways of working.

Het Geluid van Overvecht

In the Utrecht neighbourhood of Overvecht, people from different backgrounds meet through music. Workshops, playing together and band coaching give that encounter form.

As artistic director, I guide the musical process. We begin with what participants bring and build a sound in which different voices can exist alongside one another.

Together with double bassist Benjamin de Boer, I create podcasts, concerts and co-creations. We explore what music can mean for health and how people relate to one another.

With our guests, we do more than talk: we also make music. The conversation continues through improvisation and composition.

Sushi Sous-chef Youssef

A world of ideas, rolling and sharing.

Meet Youssef, a seven-year-old boy who likes nothing better than rolling up the world.

When new ideas keep appearing in his head, he discovers how special food becomes when you roll it, cut it open and share it. But what happens when he learns that his big invention has existed for centuries? Sushi Sous-chef Youssef is a playful and warm picture book about creativity, ego, inspiration and discovering what only you can add to an existing idea.

Biography

Improvisation is the thread that runs through it all.

I am Jesse Brouwer: pianist, singer, composer and improviser. My work does not fit neatly into one genre. And I rather like that.

I studied at the Popacademie and at HKU in the Musician 3.0 programme. That is where my curiosity about making music with other people took clearer form.

That curiosity still runs through everything I do. In an original song, I look for the right words and sounds. On stage, I listen to what the moment needs. With a group, I offer direction while leaving room for ideas I could not have thought of myself.

Alongside my work as a performing musician, I am artistic director and trainer at Tune In and Het Geluid van Overvecht. With Benjamin de Boer, I am building MeeMakers.

More about my background

I have worked with, among others, Het Concertgebouw, TivoliVredenburg, BIMHUIS, Lister, Cultuur19, Buitenkunst and Boom Chicago. Kobranie — conducted improvisation with a group — is also part of my experience.

From comedy and choral music to neoclassical piano, I look for musical freedom, attention and playing together in all these different settings.
